International Youth Day 2020
In 1999, The United Nations declared that August 12th would be ‘International Youth Day,’ a day to celebrate young peoples’ voices, engagements, and contributions to their communities. So today, people everywhere are celebrating IYD 2020. There is a collective acknowledgement that young people have a power to shape our future — a power which needs to be recognized all year round.
The theme of this year’s IYD is ‘Youth Engagement for Global Action’. In a time where trust in our institutions and political establishments is wavering worldwide, the UN aims to highlight “the ways in which the engagement of young people at the local, national and global levels is enriching national and multilateral institutions and processes, as well as draw lessons on how their representation and engagement in formal institutional politics can be significantly enhanced” (United Nations 2020).
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, celebrations and commemorations of IYD 2020 will be podcast-style discussion. They’ll be led by prominent youth who are within UN organizations, as well as parliamentarians and activists. There will also be creative elements and other online tools offered to participants of International Youth Day 2020.
Here at mindyourmind, we’re spending IYD looking back on some of our favourite August 12th memories. If you’d like to see how we’ve celebrated in the past, you can check out our website for pages like this International Youth Day Remix of 2014.
