12 Days of mindyourmind: Day 6 - Reach Out 8-Bit
The 12 Days of mindyourmind blog series seeks to highlight the ways in which you can use the tools we’ve created with the youth you work with. We know that it can be difficult to think of new ideas, so we’ve compiled some of our best resources and interesting ways to use them.
Reach Out 8-Bit is definitely a favourite of mine! This is a “mental health 101” game that has morphed over the years — starting as a travelling handmade game and eventually turning into a two player game with different themed versions. Every so often, we have youth consult the evolution of its look and make sure the questions are relevant and accurate as we learn more about mental health over time. This is such a fun way to promote learning, critical thinking, awareness, and to foster positive dynamics with the youth you work with. Reach Out 8-Bit is a great introductory lesson on mental health and, as someone who has run through this game with many groups, inspires some awesome conversations to have with young people — plus, there’s fun retro sound effects! Depending on the size of your group, you could have each youth take turns answering the questions, or have pairs answer questions together. After a question is answered in the game, there is follow-up text and sometimes a reflection question. Consider having youth discuss the reflection question as a group as well. If your organization does have some funding, you could purchase our multi-player version to make it even more fun and engaging!
We hope this has given you some inspiration. If you have any different ideas or interesting ways you’ve used our tools, we’d love to hear about it. Stay tuned for our next installment of The 12 Days of mindyourmind , dropping tomorrow!
